The Tyrone-Snyder Library grew from the efforts of a "Great Books"
discussion group that had been started by Dr. John Hassler. Many
of the members became the first directors of the library. The
library started with donated books and funds in a building provided
rent-free!
The building, was built on the site of the Farber property, originally
was the B.P.O.E. Lodge #212 Temple and was dedicated on March
28, 1928. On June 7, 1979 the Elks sold the building to the Library
for $75,000.
The Library, organized August 20, 1965, was in the Clyde Black
Show Room, corner of 10th Street and Logan Avenue for
two years and then in a two-story house at 1055 Logan Avenue from
1967-1979, when they moved to their current location. In 1990
the second floor auditorium was completely renovated. The first
library in Tyrone was in the early 1900s on the second floor of
the YMCA. It has to close when the PRR withdrew its support of
the YMCA.
